Several years ago when my sister Kristin came to visit, we watched a movie and she asked if we could turn the subtitles on for the movie. I'd never watched movies with the subtitles on before, and I thought it so distracting because I found myself reading the entire movie. Even when I would try to just watch the picture, it wasn't long before my eyes made their way to the words. But as distracting as it was, I found myself getting so much more out of the movie. I never realized how much dialogue I was missing in movies. Even though I'm obviously watching and listening to the movie, I wasn't hearing/understanding 100% of the dialogue. So, now I always have the subtitles on when I watch movies. I've gotten used to them over the years and I don't find them distracting at all anymore. I think I've gotten used to having them on so that I'm able to watch the movie AND read the words simultaneously without much effort and without really thinking about it. Now when I watch movies in the theater and there are no subtitles, I wish there were because I really get a lot more out of movies when I'm reading the dialogue AND hearing it. What about you? Are there any other subtitle fans out there?

Me too! Especially tv shows with fast dialogue and slang like The Wire. I honestly don't understand half of it without subtitles. I was thinking there must be something wrong with my hearing-glad to know I'm not alone!

I find subtitles very useful. I don't use them all of the time, but do so quite frequently.
If you can do subtitles, you need to watch the French film "My Father's Castle." It is such a cute film! I think you would enjoy it.

Brett and I always watch movies with the subtitles on. It's actually really disorienting when we get an older movie that doesn't have subtitles. We're always like, "What did he just say?" "I don't know, I couldn't hear." And then rewinding and trying to catch it, or just giving up.....*sigh*
We do the same thing!
I am deaf in one ear so that is what got me started on subtitles...but now I hate watching anything without them. You understand everything so much better. Love them.
I've been to movie theaters where they have dialog and descriptions for the hard of hearing. Something you could look for when going to the theater!
